Even hand-selected natural granite from a single quarry and a single batch will show tonal and veining variation once laid. Contractors, quantity surveyors and property owners often ask: "Is this a quality problem? Can we request slabs that are all exactly the same colour?"

The answer is straightforward: colour variation is an inherent characteristic of natural granite, not a quality defect — and international standards take a clear position on this. This article explains why, from three perspectives: geological science, international standards, and design value.

 

1. The Geology: Mineral Composition Determines Tone

Granite is an igneous rock formed as magma cools and crystallises deep in the Earth's crust over hundreds of thousands of years. Its principal minerals are:

• Quartz — grey-white, translucent
• Feldspar — white, beige or pink
• Mica and hornblende — black or dark grey speckles

The proportion, crystal size and distribution of these minerals vary naturally even across a single quarry face. Once cut into slabs, every piece carries a unique mineral pattern — which is why tonal variation is geological in origin, not a quality defect.

Pink granite, for example, owes its colour to feldspar content, and its gentle tonal gradation is a natural characteristic. In grey granite, the dark speckles come from mica and hornblende, and their distribution differs from slab to slab.

 

2. What International Standards Say: Performance, Not Colour Uniformity

Clients sometimes ask: "Don't the standards require consistent colour?" In fact, the major international stone standards take a remarkably consistent position — they govern physical performance, while colour is confirmed by samples:

• ASTM C615 (USA) — Granite Dimension Stone: specifies physical properties only, such as water absorption, density and compressive strength; colour and texture are confirmed through approved samples, not specification limits.
• EN 1341 / EN 12058 (EU) — Natural Stone Paving: appearance is assessed against a range of reference samples, and the inherent colour and texture variation of natural stone is expressly accepted.
• Natural Stone Institute — Dimension Stone Design Manual: recommends approving range samples rather than a single sample, because colour variation is an inherent characteristic of the material.

In short, international standards uniformly treat colour variation as a natural attribute, not a defect.

 

3. The Design Value: Tonal Interplay Creates Depth

More importantly, natural colour variation is precisely why designers choose natural granite in the first place.

Natural variation gives large paved areas depth and rhythm — every slab is one of a kind. By contrast, man-made granite and fired ceramic tiles are perfectly uniform in tone, which can appear flat and monotonous across large areas and lacks the warmth of natural material.

Look closely and you will notice that airports, rail stations and public plazas across Hong Kong pave extensively with natural granite — dark borders framing a lighter field, pink granite plazas with natural gradation. With considered layout planning, natural variation becomes the visual highlight of the space.

 

4. Practical Recommendations: Three Points Before Ordering

1. Approve a range of samples rather than a single sample, so the natural variation band of the stone is fully understood.
2. For large-area installations, carry out a dry-lay before fixing, allowing the installer to distribute tones across the layout and preview the overall effect.
3. Natural stone colour may vary slightly between batches, so confirming samples before placing an order remains the most reliable practice.

Q: The granite in my batch shows colour variation — can I return it?
A: Colour variation is an inherent characteristic of natural stone and is expressly accepted by international standards, so it does not generally constitute grounds for return or exchange. Approving a range of samples before ordering is the best protection for both buyer and supplier.

Q: What if the project requires completely uniform colour?
A: Where a highly uniform tone is required, man-made granite or fired ceramic tiles may be considered. Note, however, that large areas will read as visually flat and even, quite different from the layered character of natural stone.

Q: Do natural granite dimensions vary as well?
A: Yes. Natural granite is cut by hand or machine from natural stone, so length, width and thickness carry an approximate tolerance of 2 to 3 millimetres. This is normal for natural stone.
